Researchers have now shown for the first time how artificially grown mini-intestines can be used in nutritional and diabetic research. They demonstrated that the mini-intestine is an ideal model for investigating hormone release and transport mechanisms in the digestive tract. Targeting LGR5+ Cells with an Antibody-Drug Conjugate for the Treatment of Colon Cancer
Scientists evaluated a strategy that targets the cell surface leucine-rich repeat-containing G protein-coupled receptor 5 (LGR5), a well-characterized tissue stem cell and cancer stem cell marker, with an antibody conjugated to distinct cytotoxic drugs. [Sci Transl Med] Abstract

Divalent Metal-Ion Transporter 1 Is Decreased in Intestinal Epithelial Cells and Contributes to the Anemia in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Researchers investigated expression of divalent metal-ion transporter 1 (DMT1) in the intestinal mucosa by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry, and found that DMT1 was significantly decreased in the inflamed mucosa of active inflammatory bowel disease patients compared with that in those patients at remission stage and healthy controls. Hydroxytyrosol, a Product from Olive Oil, Reduces Colon Cancer Growth by Enhancing Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Degradation
The authors studied the effects and mechanism of 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenil)ethanol (hydroxytyrosol), a polyphenol from extra-virgin olive oil, investigating the regulation of epidermal growth factor receptor expression in colon tumor cells. [Mol Nutr Food Res] Abstract

Inflammation Controls Sensitivity of Human and Mouse Intestinal Epithelial Cells to Galectin-1
Intestinal epithelial cells isolated from mice or patients with inflammatory bowel diseases were incubated with different pro-inflammatory cytokines, and galectin-1 binding, secretion of homeostatic factors and viability were assessed. [J Cell Physiol] Abstract

BAG3 Regulates Cell Proliferation, Migration, and Invasion in Human Colorectal Cancer
Researchers demonstrated that Bcl2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3) overexpression plays a critical role in cell proliferation, migration, and invasion of colorectal cancer. [Tumor Biol] Abstract

Sphingosine Kinase 2 and Ceramide Transport as Key Targets of the Natural Flavonoid Luteolin to Induce Apoptosis in Colon Cancer Cells
Researchers investigated the effects of luteolin on colon cancer cells, focusing on the balance between ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate, two sphingoid mediators with opposite roles on cell fate. [PLoS One] Full Article

Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 5A2 (eIF5A2) Regulates Chemoresistance in Colorectal Cancer through Epithelial Mesenchymal Transition
The authors investigated whether eIF5A2 was involved in the chemoresistance to doxorubicin in colorectal cancer. They found that eIF5A2-negative colon cancer cells (HCT116 and HT29) were more sensitive to doxorubicin compared with the eIF5A2-positive cells [Cancer Cell Int] Full Article


Aneuploidy Causes Premature Differentiation of Neural and Intestinal Stem Cells
Aneuploid neural stem cells presented an extended G1 phase, which led to cell cycle exit and premature differentiation. Scientists showed that this response to aneuploidy was also present in adult intestinal stem cells but not in the wing disc. [Nat Commun] Full Article | Video
