TOP STORY
Lab-Developed Intestinal Organoids Form Mature Human Tissue in Mice
Researchers have successfully transplanted “organoids” of functioning human intestinal tissue grown from pluripotent stem cells in a lab dish into mice – creating an unprecedented model for studying diseases of the intestine. [Press release from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital discussing online prepublication in Nature Medicine] Press Release | Abstract

INTESTINAL CANCERS & DISEASES

Long Non-Coding RNA ZFAS1 Interacts with CDK1 and Is Involved in p53-Dependent Cell Cycle Control and Apoptosis in Colorectal Cancer
The authors showed that ZFAS1 silencing decreases proliferation through G1-arrest of cell cycle, and also tumorigenicity of colorectal cancer cells. [Oncotarget] Full Article

Bis-Cyclopropane Analog of Disorazole C1 Is a Microtubule-Destabilizing Agent Active in ABCB1-Overexpressing Human Colon Cancer Cells
The novel, chemically stabilized disorazole analog, (-)-CP2-disorazole C1 displayed potent anti-proliferative activity against a broad-spectrum of human colorectal cancer cells. [Oncotarget] Full Article

The Effects of a Novel Aliphatic-Chain Hydroxamate Derivative WMJ-S-001 in HCT116 Colorectal Cancer Cell Death
Researchers explored the underlying mechanisms by which WMJ-S-001 induces HCT116 colorectal cancer cell death. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Effect of Heat-Inactivated Clostridium sporogenes and Its Conditioned Media on 3-Dimensional Colorectal Cancer Cell Models
The effects of heat-inactivated C. sporogenes bacteria and conditioned media on CT26 and HCT116 colorectal cancer cells were examined on a 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional platform. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Oncogenic Activin C Interacts with Decorin in Colorectal Cancer In Vivo and In Vitro
The authors found that the expression of activin C was remarkably increased in the intestine of Dcn-/- mice compared to the expression of activin C in the intestine of Dcn+/+ mice. Addition of activin C protein to colorectal cancer cells or over-expression of activin C in these cells stimulated cell growth, migration, and invasion in vitro. [Mol Carcinog] Abstract

LncRNA-ATB Mediated E-Cadherin Repression Promotes the Progression of Colon Cancer and Predicts Poor Prognosis
Researchers elucidated the role of long non-coding RNA-activated by TGF-β (lncRNA-ATB) and its clinical value in colon cancer. [J Gastroenterol Hepatol] Abstract

MiR-320b Suppresses Cell Proliferation by Targeting C-Myc in Human Colorectal Cancer Cells
Investigators showed that miR-320b expression was down regulated in both colorectal cancer (CRC) tissues and cells. Overexpression of miR-320b in CRC cells was statistically correlated with a decrease of cell growth in vitro and in vivo, while c-MYC was identified as a target gene of miR-320b in CRC. [BMC Cancer] Full Article

INTESTINAL STEM CELL & ORGANOID RESEARCH

Comparative Effects of Diet and Carcinogen on MicroRNA Expression in the Stem Cell Niche of the Mouse Colonic Crypt
The authors utilized Lgr5+ reporter mice to determine the impact of diet and carcinogen on miRNA expression in colonic stem cells and their progeny. [Biochim Biophys Acta] Abstract
